Aikido, Iaido & Self-Defense classes in Tacoma, Washington.

About Mr. Bookman Marvin Bookman is owner and Cho, Chief Instructor, of Aikido Tacoma, a traditional, independent dojo.

Mr. Bookman has been practicing the Japanese martial arts Aikido and Iaido for approximately 30 years, teaching for the past 17 years. He is also recognized by the International Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Federation as a Certified Self Defense Instructor.

Mr. Bookman was a member dojo with the United States Aikido Federation (USAF) in New Your City for 25 years and the International Aikido Federation (IAF) in Tokyo, Japan, for 20 years before starting his own independent dojo, Aikido Greenwich Village (for 10 years), in New York City.

Mr. Bookman began practicing Aikido in 1973 under his brother's instruction, when his brother Bruce Bookman sensei was teaching at the McBurney YMCA in New York City. Mr. Bookman then had the privilege to study at the New York Aikikai under Yoshimtsu Yamada sensei, who sponsored him for his Yudansha ranks, teaching license and membership dojo in the USAF & IAF, and later with Seiichi Sugano sensei. Mr. Bookman's practice was further honed by the skillful guidance and expert instruction of Rick Stickles and Frank Johnson, who also practiced and taught at the New York Aikikai.

Mr. Bookman began his study of Iaido in 1983 with Mitsuzuka Takeshi and had the privilege of receiving private, daily lessons from Mitsuzuka sensei while the Iaido master stayed in his loft in New York City, giving seminars in Muso Shinden Ryu Iaido in New York and surrounding states. Mr. Bookman then continued his practice of Iaido and jo with the Japanese Sword Society. He went on to study at the New York Budokai with Grand Master Yoshiteru Otani, Frank Lisi sensei and Damian Bennett sensei.

Mr. Bookman moved from New York City to Washington State 7 years ago and in that time has had the privilege to teach under his brother Bruce Bookman sensei at the Tenzan dojo in Seattle; the Pearl Street YMCA under Ms. Fujiko Gardner in Tacoma; as well as for Tacoma Parks and Recreation. He has a dojo in Tacoma WA since 2001, that is now open.
